Warning!
(DO NOT read on if the title bothers u!)
Lil did I realize, it's that time of the month. Hungry Ghost Festival starts officially today-1st August, but in the Chinese Lunar calendar-1st of the 7th month. How creepy is that! =S Wuish! I would rather think of it as a coincidence! It's not that Im superstitious or what-so-ever but its up to the individual entirely about this festival-thingy. For me, I usually don't bother but Mum would make such a big fuss about it, as in no late outings and blah blah blah..... Piff~
Somehow, this year its different. It just hit me that, will Grandma be 'out' as well? Sigh. I really do miss her so much! Im wondering how's she doing. There's always this thought that there is such thing as spirit but others would rubbish it off. I chose to believe in it. Yup. Therefore, to those who felt uneasy reading this, please do ignore this post!
During this entire month (it used to be until the 14th of the 7th month), there will be lots of people offering to the wandering spirits roaming earth near the road sides or merely outdoors of the side of the house. It is believed by the Chinese that during this month, the gates of hell are opened to free the hungry ghosts who then wander to seek food on Earth. Some even think that the ghosts would seek revenge on those who had wronged them in their lives. The reason why the Chinese celebrate this festival is to remember their dead family members and pay tribute to them. They also feel that offering food to the deceased appeases them and wards off bad luck.
Another belief among the Chinese is that the dead return to visit their living relatives during the 7th month and thus they prepare a sumptuous meal for the ‘hungry ghosts’. The Chinese feel that they have to satisfy the ghosts in order to get good fortune and luck in their lives.
During the 7th month, the Chinese offer prayers to the deceased relatives and burn joss sticks. In Singapore, it is a common sight to see entertaining ‘wayang’ shows and concerts performed on outdoor stages in some neighborhoods. These events are always held at night. There is a belief that this entertainment would please those wandering ghosts.
As in Malaysia, it's not such a big occasion compared to Singapore. Thankfully, I'll be going over for internship right after the end of the festival. It's not a tradition in my family, therefore, not much to be done. Just be like usual but obviously with extra care here and there lah. Maybe I'll consult Mum tomorrow bout what she thinks of this. She's so busy with work lately that I hardly had the chance to talk to her. Fuh~ So, like what I've used to do the previous year on the 7th month-try to stay home as much as possible! Now that's tough..... =S
p/s: if there's a chance, I would like to hear from her!
